Groundbreaking skills and employment project has funding renewed

A programme which gives unemployed people the self-belief and skills to get back to work has had its funding renewed for another year.

Ignite is a free, six-week programme focusing on self-development and wellbeing which has been operated by charitable housing association BCHA at its HQ at St Swithuns House in Bournemouth, since 2010.

In 2018 alone, Ignite learners achieved 480 qualifications, with 67 people moving into employment and 42 taking up voluntary work.

Ignite is funded by the Education & Skills Funding Agency under a partnership with Skills & Learning Adult Community Education (part of Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council).

Project Manager Jamie Clarke, said: “Like any training programme Ignite relies on continued funding, so we are extremely pleased that Skills & Learning has recognised our value and success by investing £120k in the programme this year.

“This money will enable many long term unemployed people and those who have experienced mental health problems to make good choices and find a clear path forward.”

Ignite, which celebrates its 10th birthday in 2020, stages a range of workshops and classes tailored to build self-esteem, confidence and achievement, which are delivered by experienced development coaches.

Workshops include Stress and Anxiety Management, IT, Money Skills, Assertiveness and Emotional and Physical Wellbeing.

As a National Open College Network (NOCN) accredited centre, the programme also offers a range of qualifications including Skills for Work, Level 1 Horticulture, Digital Life Skills, Level 1 IT user skills and Level 1 Skills for Supporting Others.

Ignite ‘graduate’ Kathy Brown was referred to BCHA after being identified by legal services as an abused woman.

She said: “The programme focuses on your self-development and wellbeing and led to me into getting voluntary work in a rehab centre. After this I did a number of other courses including confidence and personal development programmes.

“I’m now looking to qualify as an adult education teacher and then hopefully one day as a life coach.

“Ignite enabled me to make choices and change the way I feel and I just know my future will get better and better.”
