In the heart of Dorset Lodge, a transformation has taken place – a mural, vibrant with colours and brimming with life, now adorns the walls. This is not just any mural; it's a collaborative masterpiece created through the innovative 'Paint by Numbers' project led by Bethany White, a dedicated support worker at Dorset Lodge and Lansdowne Gardens. Over the past year, Bethany has been the creative force behind several murals across BCHA services, each crafted with a unique approach that embodies co-production and community engagement.
Bethany, along with her colleague Micha, conceptualised the 'Paint by Numbers' mural, aiming to deepen resident involvement in the creative process. This initiative saw residents play a pivotal role in deciding the painting’s theme, colours, and overall composition, ultimately choosing an enchanting 'under the sea' scene. Bethany skilfully outlined the design, empowering residents to fill it with colour and life, and then added final touches to bring the mural to its full vibrancy.
Reflecting on the project, Bethany White said: "The co-production element of this mural holds great value for people with complex needs. By getting involved in painting this mural, residents can engage with a new, positive, and meaningful use of time. They can fully immerse themselves in their creativity, taking a pause from usual distractions by practicing mindfulness. While it’s inspiring for them on their recovery journey, it’s equally inspiring for me to continue incorporating creative and therapeutic activities into the work I do to support people affected by homelessness."
Two residents were actively involved in preparing the room for this artistic venture, finding it a meaningful and therapeutic way to spend their time. Kirsten, another Dorset Lodge resident worked alongside Bethany in painting the mural, an experience that offered a safe and creative outlet for mindfulness and presence.
Kirsten said, “I really enjoyed the paint by numbers; it helped me to focus and keeps me distracted from everything else going on. I would love to do it again, or something similar to art therapy.”
This mural is a part of the larger transformation of Dorset Lodge, which is now a vibrant learning space for residents across all BCHA schemes. The room will host skill courses, mental health services, drug and alcohol clinics, and much more. The inclusion of art supplies and musical instruments invites everyone to explore and nurture their creative talents.
The project took two weeks to complete. Its significance extends beyond aesthetics; it is a testament to the power of art in fostering focus, mindfulness, and a sense of community. Residents involved in the painting process expressed how it helped them step out of their usual routines and engage in a safe, creative activity.
Vicky Gladden, Quality and Practice Lead- Psychologically Informed Environments, emphasised the importance of such transformations: "This mural, and others like it created by Bethany, are vivid representations of our commitment to creating Psychologically Informed Environments. These spaces are crucial in making our residents feel safe, supported, and motivated on their journey to recovery. We are fortunate to have someone as talented as Bethany, who generously shares her skills with our residents, making a profound impact on their lives."
As Bethany White continues to weave her artistic magic across BCHA services, her murals stand as colourful beacons of hope, healing, and the transformative power of community collaboration. These projects are more than just art; they are the heartbeats of spaces that nurture recovery, creativity, and a sense of belonging. As Bethany looks towards the future, her next steps are to pursue a Masters in Art Therapy.
