New Leaf Allotment

New Leaf Allotment

BCHA have a 2.2 acre allotment which is situated in Throop. New Leaf Allotment is home to several ground and raised growing beds, poly-tunnels, a pond, 40 apple trees and lots of wildlife. We’ve also recently introduced to the site a small wood working area, which allows both our students and volunteers to gain further skills.

We have an Allotment Coordinator who maintains the site, with the help of a dedicated team of volunteers who turn up come rain or shine all year round!

We offer people the opportunity to gain the NOCN Level 1 Certificate in Horticulture (QCF) at our allotment. This accredited course is designed to introduce learners to the skills and knowledge required to progress within the horticultural sector, or wider land-based industry.

The course is suitable for learners who are new to the sector as it provides knowledge of health and safety, the growing of plants, the use of tools and the skills demanded by horticultural practice.

How can New Leaf Allotment help me?

The New Leaf Allotment can provide you with the opportunity to put your green fingers to use by volunteering to take on some responsibility to help maintain the allotment - getting involved in everything from pruning our apple trees to potting up in the polytunnels! The allotment is a hive of activity all year round.

Our allotment also offers you the chance to gain a nationally recognised qualification, which will be great for your CV and provide you with horticultural skills and knowledge. The course is delivered by a tutor who is experienced and knowledgeable in horticulture and will allow you to progress to:

  • Higher level horticulture related qualifications
  • Apprenticeships
  • Employment in this field

What will be expected of me?

If you take part in the horticulture course then you will be expected to take part in practical activities, as well as learning the theory behind horticulture techniques. Each course will be broken down in to sessions designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge necessary to gain the qualification.
