We have a purpose built Training Academy facility in our new social enterprise, The Factory, in Poole, where we deliver two Construction Skills Courses:
- Level 1 City & Guilds Painting & Decorating
- Level 1 City & Guilds Carpentry & Joinery
We have two separate workshops where each of the above courses is delivered. The Carpentry & Joinery Workshop is equipped with individual work benches and an extensive range of carpentry tools. While the Painting & Decorating Workshop is equipped with individual bays, including door frames, to enable students to gain skills in a contextualised environment.
Both courses are designed to introduce learners to the skills and knowledge which is required to progress within the construction industry, and aims to develop people’s skills to a commercial standard.
Both courses support learners new to the sector by providing knowledge of health and safety, and the use and care of tools. The Painting & Decorating course teaches learners to prepare surfaces for painting, paint finishing techniques and wall papering skills. The Carpentry and Joinery course teaches learners an introduction and development of bench joinery and carpentry skills, and an introduction to cabinet making skills.
How can the Training Academy help me?
Both courses are designed for complete beginners. They will help you to develop the skills you need to gain a recognised qualification, helping you to gain employment within your chosen industry.
Once you have completed the course you will also be in a position to progress to the Level 2 qualification.
What will be expected of me?
You will be expected to take part in practical activities as well as learning the theory behind painting and decorating, or carpentry and joinery techniques.
Each course will be broken down in to manageable sessions designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge necessary to gain the qualification. You will be expected to show commitment to the course and attend each of these sessions.
Who can sign up to these courses?
Anyone aged over 19 is eligible to sign up for either of these courses. There are no academic requirements for this course, however, at the start of the course there will be a basic skills assessment to identify whether you would benefit from any additional support with English and Maths. There will also be a practical skills test to ascertain if any help is required with things such as mobility or access.
These courses are typically funded for anyone who is in receipt of Job-Seekers Allowance (JSA), Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), or any other income-based benefit, and who is over the age of 19.
If you are already in employment and are interested in signing up to these courses, there are spaces for paying learners too – the cost of the course will vary so please contact the course tutor for further details (contact details below).
